Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument

As a protected area, this park, designated as an International Biosphere Reserve, allows the life of the Sonoran Desert to flourish under nearly ideal wilderness conditions. It’s an outstanding natural preserve where one of the of the Earth’s major ecosystems survives almost unspoiled.
Meet the First Americans
Thousands of years ago, the ancestors of the Tohono O’odham nation settled the Sonoran Desert, creating sophisticated canal systems to irrigate their crops of cotton, tobacco, corn, beans, and squash. They built vast ball courts and huge ceremonial mounds and left behind fine red-on-buff pottery and exquisite jewelry of stone, shell, and clay.
The Tohono O’odham people of today welcome you to share in their rich history by visiting the Cultural Center and Museum.
